Yea, it's a tough call Patricia on what strategy to take regarding your Lifestream. I like taking two separate approaches. First I think it's a good idea to create one that is self-hosted using one of the many solutions available out there. Secondly find a Lifestreaming service(s) that you like to use more as a socialstream that serves two purposes. To both interact with other users Lifestreams as well as share content you're interested in.

Wise words. I'm using Storytlr and fully enjoying it. I even set up custom domain a few hours ago, but this post is now making me have second thoughts. Maybe we're all better off with WordPress lifestream plugins - there's always the risk of some data loss depending on how you set it up, however, at least you're in control of your lifestream by choosing that option.

I agree it was pretty inconsiderate of the owners of Swurl to simply wipe the service off with no in advance warning to users. I guess "you get what you pay for", however, respect and consideration should be standard behavior IMO.

Those are just two examples but nowadays many people have some pretty complicated workflows where they use a source service to move or sync data amongst various other services (fodder for another post I need to write).

Yes - this could be useful. I have tried a couple of ways but I'm still not completely happy. The problem is that it would be hard to write a recipe since no one uses exactly the same combination of services.

http://blog.hieronymouse.com/?p=32, http://blog.hieronymouse.com/?p=19

More evidence everyone should self host their activity stream output on Google App Engine or Amazon cloud services - then link to others via Google Friend Connect or other DiSo compliant substrates.

I think self-hosted lifestreaming is the best solution. Atleast until there is really one big company that runs a lifestreaming service (like blogger and wordpress are now big enough to trust your blog to) with enough modification possible.

I eventually ended up writing my own self-hosted-stream-blog code-thingie-stuff (http://pascal.orangepixel.net/) , but there are others out there that can be tweaked to your personal taste. And isn't that an important aspect of your personal lifestream: not some generic service with look and feel, but a personality that suits you?
