Life Collage Wordpress Lifestreaming Theme

June 4, 2009 | by: Mark Krynsky | Comments |

Posted in : Review, Software

Life Collage is a new Lifesteaming theme for Wordpress that is actually a child theme built on the Hybrid framework. What is a Wordpress theme framework you ask? Well these are Themes built with flexibility in mind, designed so that you can tweak them to fit your needs. This can usually be done in a way that doesn’t modify the core theme, so that upgrading later doesn’t become a problem. They also often offer a theme settings page that allow for many options to be set in an easy way without having to dig into the code. If you want to learn more or try a theme framework, I came across this great post titled 20 Wordpress Theme Frameworks and Starting Resources.

So I started by first downloading the required Hybrid theme framework and installed it. I recommend that you activate this theme and then go through the settings page to configure it the way you want. Then you can move on to downloading and installing the Life Collage theme. Once installed you can create your Lifestream by adding a new page and then selecting the included Lifestream template from the dropdown as opposed to the default template.

The template will provide a center column that displays short versions of your blog posts. Under that it will then display a ribbon of images courtesy of the FlickrRSS plugin. The Hybrid framework provides many custom widgets and the Life Collage theme adds a custom Lifestream widget that allows you to add as many external RSS feeds to be displayed in a two column format under the ribbon of images imported from Flickr.

So that’s about all this theme has to offer at this point but it is version 0.1 so perhaps we will see more features added to take advantage of the framework already in place.

Cliqset Wants to be Your Centralized Profile

June 1, 2009 | by: Trae Blain | Comments |

This is a guest post from reader Trae Blain. You can visit his site at traeblain.com. If you are interested in writing a guest post, just head on over to the contact page.

cliqsetCliqset has been around for a while, but I have just recently stumbled across their service. The easiest way to describe Cliqset is that it’s much like Plaxo in that it wants to be your centralized profile. You can add all your contact info into Cliqset and you’re profile will be viewable to all or just your set of contacts which are also added to Cliqset. This ties you and your contacts information and web activity together into one site.

Cliqset enters the lifestreaming world by including all your various web content into your profile. See Example. The profile page is standard fair, as far as profile pages go, with your online content placed in a steady stream. The items are nicely grouped together so you don’t get a long stream of pictures when you decide to upload all your vacation pictures, usurping all your other activity.

cliqset

The main feature that sets Cliqset apart is not its lifestream capabilities, but its platform that you can use to ensure all your social profiles are the same. This can help bring unity among all your social profiles. Also Cliqset provides you with a OpenID url that is the same as your profile url. This can further help in unifying your online identity. I have not been able to dive into the platform tool much.

cliqset-servicesCliqset can aggregate from 30 social services including location based services like Brightkite and FireEagle.  Adding each service is very straight forward and simple. Most of the items simply ask for your username and many (as far as setting up your profile goes) don’t ask for any login credentials. Adding my Yahoo profile was the only item I had some difficulty getting setup.

Cliqset is a nice, clean profile site with lifestreaming capabilites. It supports many features that profile pages offered by Google and Yahoo do not provide. Cliqset can most closely resemble Plaxo in number of features for your online profile.

Lifestreaming Presentation at Ignite Cardiff by Tom Beardshaw

Posted in : News

I featured Tom Beardshaw in my last installment of the Custom Lifesstream Gallery. Tom is an avid Lifestreamer and recently did a presentation at an Ignite conference in Cardiff in the UK.

Ignite conferences are unique in that they offer a different format for presentations where you only have 20 slides that rotate every 15 seconds giving you only 5 minutes to engage and educate your audience. Tom did a presentation on Lifestreaming using this format and I think he did a pretty good job.

He has provided a video and slideshow of his presentation which I’ve only provided screenshots of below because you should visit his site to view them and get full details.

Visit Tom’s site to view these and if you know of any other good presentations on Lifestreaming, post them in the comments.
