Segregate your Lifestream with the Aggregator Theme for Wordpress

I have seen several themes that take a slightly different approach to Lifestreaming where instead of simply providing a reverse chronological output of all the items from your stream, they segregate the output. I quite like this approach because many times if you post infrequently to some services they get lost quickly, never to be found again. With a segregation method you can highlight specific feeds regardless of the last time you published to them.

Aggregator provides this functionality and while it’s not a theme specifically designed for Lifestreaming, it can easily be adapted for it. It provides a display approach very similar to Alltop or Popurls. It’s powered by Simplepie so you know its feed handling is going to be solid. Lastly this is a free theme so it’s definitely worth checking out.

Here are some of the features it provides

  • Widget based layout – add as many feeds as you want using one single widget again and again.
  • Specify post count on each feed.
  • While aggregating feeds for image / video site, you have an option to display the feeds as images or post titles.
  • Aggregate feeds of any kind – blog posts, flickr images, video or audio
  • On hover of the feed news titles, further snippet of the article is displayed
  • 2 detailed colorschemes
  • Drop-down menu
  • Normal blog, single post and page layouts, comments are also well designed.

Also be sure to check out Livetwit which is another neat theme specifically built for a Twitter user or search results output.

2009 was a great year for designers  creating custom Lifestreaming themes for Wordpress. I now list 15 such themes that are available.

Nythemes.com has selected their top 3 Lifestreaming themes for 2009.

From the post:

As every serious blogger is preaching right now, blogging has evolved to a new level – call it blogging 3.0 – the lifestream (at least at a personal level). This requires a theme where you have your Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr entries mixed together with blog posts for a complete experience of your personality.

Wordpress Themer Jason Schuller Reboots His Lifestream

You may remember Jason Schuller from previous posts here at Lifestream Blog. He called out for users to provide feedback on a Lifestreaming theme he was working on and released it for free back in September.

Well today he announced a re-design of his personal Lifestream and I think it looks pretty good. I’m a big fan of segregating your aggregation (Hah, I like that) by individual services which he’s done. I like how he offers a brief description for each service. I would like to see better use of screen real estate to provide more services on the screen, but it still looks good.

No word on whether he plans on releasing this new theme like he did with his previous Lifestream.

Lifestream Wordpress Theme Released by Press 75

It’s been almost two months since I wrote a post about a new Lifestream theme being created by Jason Schuller which was inspired by a re-design he did of his personal site. Well he has just released it for free on his premium theme site catalog at Press75.com

I installed it on my local machine to give it a quick test. I had it up and running quickly without any problems whatsoever. Many of the other Lifestreaming themes out there that get their functionality by being paired with a plugin that allows you to import services. Jason decided to build that feature directly into the theme. The only drawback to that is that he only supports 3 services out of the box which include Twitter, Flickr, and Delicious and the ability to add one more external RSS feed. This may be a limitation for people so it’s worthy of noting. However I did happen to have the Wordpress Lifestream plugin running for the site I was testing on and it worked and appeared nicely within this theme.

I really like the clean minimal look of the theme as well as the typography used. But some may find it may be too clean because it doesn’t appear to support any sidebar widgets which is also worth pointing out. There are also some other differences in Jason’s original theme design for his site which I liked that didn’t make it into this version. He originally provided a profile legend with links to many additional social media services as part of the navigation. He also displayed an excerpt for the latest blog post at the top of the page. I’m not sure why he removed these but perhaps a new version will bring these features back. Speaking of new versions, he sent out a tweet showing a sneak peek of a new personal site refresh which appears to be using this theme’s framework coming soon.

Here is a video Jason recorded that shows an overview of the theme and the options page

You can download the theme and even get a live demonstration of it on the site here.
